Welcome to April’s podcast. It is a collection of nice progressive house and trance tracks with some more banging trance at the end. Since I didn’t do a mix for March, here is a special extended set, almost filling up the entire 80 minutes.

This mix starts at a nice pace of 135bpm, and winds up banging the last 3 or 4 tracks at 142bpm.

EP013: The Designer v. Enso – Parts 1 & 2

My friend Enso and I used to spin together a lot back in the Comer House days. But, times change, life happens, and we hadn’t had a head to head session in a while. So, over the Holidays we got together here in Southern California and recorded a 2 part mix.

The way we recorded was I would play a track, then he would play a track, then I would play a track. It is tricky since he doesn’t necessarily know my track, and I don’t know his. That and we were spinning CDs so we couldn’t cheat and look for the drops in the vinyl.

The result of this session I bring to you. The first 80 minutes is hard trance with an electro edge. The second 80 minutes is more upbeat trance, with a lot of tracks having vocals.

Hopefully we can get together again soon for another session as we have a blast doing it. So here it is, The Designer v. Enso, Parts 1 and 2.

EP012 – The Designer Podcast

Merry Christmas! here is your December fix of the Designer Podcast. This month’s mix starts out with some techy progressive and eases into some progressive trance. There are some more contemporary remixes of older favorites such as Delerium’s “Silence,” Andain’s “Beautiful Things,” and Lustral’s “Everytime.” I am also bringing you some brand new tracks. Guy J’s “Lunar” out on Bedrock is a fantastic track as well as a new one you may have heard off of Josh Gabriel’s solo release called “Azora.”

This is the new format of the podcast, I hope you like it. Starting off progressive and techy and ending up faster paced and trance-y. I love both genres, so I want to bring you the best of both worlds. I think it also emulates a typical night at a club, condensed into an hour or so.

I recorded a live head to head session with a fellow SoCal DJ and friend Enso this past weekend, so stay tuned for that special set. There will be two parts, a full 2 hours and 40 minutes! We have not gotten to spin together in a while so it was a great time that I think you will enjoy. These two sets are 100% banging trance. Stay tuned, details to follow in January.

Future Podcast Plans

Lots of ideas regarding the site and the podcast have been floating around my head lately. Thought I’d write some down and see what anybody thought about them.

Renaming the Podcast - I have been mulling this as an option because I jsut really dislike the current name. I think it is a little confusing as well when you search iTunes and get results that include actual podcasts about graphic design. Having the name ‘podcast’ in the title feels cheap and unimaginative to me as well.
Radio Show Format – This is an idea I have been tossing around. I really dig podcasts like Dance Department and Gareth Emery’s podcast. Both feature DJs saying things every few songs. I also enjoy continuous uninterrupted mixes tho, like Max Graham’s sets. The answer probably lays with how much time I actually have to produce the podcast, and would you the listener like to hear me talking or just let the music do the talking?
I also recently cleaned out my storage facility and brought home a bunch of old cd singles with a lot of classics. It made me think I should include a classic in the podcast, for those who have been in the scene a long time. I know when I hear a particular track it definitely reminds me of a moment in time when i was either spinning or partying and makes me smile.
Creating an Enhanced Podcast - I know these are only used by iTunes for the most part. I think WinAmp recognizes .m4a, and possibly Windows Media Player (note to self: research this!). I would still offer a straight MP3 for download of course, as not everyone uses an iPod. For business reasons tho, an enhanced podcast would help create awareness of a cross-promotion with Nouveau:Retro apparel, right in iTunes. It would also offer the other advantages of chaptering, seeing the playlist for that episode, and so on. Need to find software to help with that.
Rate This Podcast Feature – i would like to add an AJAX rating to each podcast, to see what you think of them in a simple straightforward way, without having to leave a comment.
Site Forum – Add a forum to this site, for discussion of podcasts and other topics of interest surrounding house and trance music. I wonder if this is overkill tho… jsut one more thing someone would need to sign up for. Would I?
Site Redesign – This site is still incomplete (no photos/bio/downloads section). I was super enthused about this design, but it is not widget-enabled and I am editing the code by hand to add links etc. which to me could be more streamlined. I have my eye on a design that I like as a base to start from. Just need the time!

EP011 – The Designer Podcast – Prog & Trance

The last two months have been crazy work-wise, and I have had to bring you a great guest mix from Matt Renshaw in September, then a trance mix from the archives for October.

But that was then and this is November. We are BACK! This month’s mix starts off with a nice calm remix by Sasha, before Junkie XL smacks you in the face and kicks the podcast into gear with his Cities In Dust. From that point on, hold onto your seat because this mix takes off. I wrap things up with a couple of great Paul Van Dyk tracks bumping at 140bpms.

I hope you like this format because I am going to try and follow it from now on… start off smooth and calm, ease into things, and then progress harder and faster from there.

The official podcast site will be undergoing some revisions soon as well, so feel free to comment on both the podcast and the look of how things are going with the site itself.

EP 010 – The Designer Podcast – Trance

October. One busy month for yours truly! Because it is such a busy month, I am bringing you a set from the archives. This is a demo set of trance I did in November of 2005 that was received well among my circle of friends at the time. Another note of distinction for me is that this is one of the last mixes I did entirely from vinyl and decks.

Next to smell, music brings back memories the best. I hope this mix conjures up some memories for you, whether you remember hearing this set or these songs individually somewhere else.

For those of you who have not heard this set or are new to trance, it has some classics from big time producers such as Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, some remixes from Sander van Doorn that made him who he is today, Agnelli & Nelson, Signal Runners, Solid Globe, Alex M.O.R.P.H. and more.

Welcome to the August Podcast… Electro House! This month’s mix features some remixes of older tracks, and I think you will love the selections. I also did a mashup edit… I won’t ruin it by stating it here (although it’s obvious if you do a little tracklist investigation ;P) which came out pretty good. If I had more free time I think I would have nailed it out of the park, but hey it’s good for the time I have!

I am also using some podcast tags this time around… let me know if you dig them or not.
